July 26, 2009 - Great-Grandmother Catherine Marie Antoinette (née July) Abraham Found! - Part 30

25 July 2009

Eureka! I found it! I know I found it! And who would have thought? Great-grandmother Marie Antoinette, hopefully, is not turning in her grave! But my, our, great-grandmother has certainly provided us with a chase… from Africa, to Europe, to South America, and to North America, quite a distance to travel between 1861 and 1940.

Following the thought regarding Sénégal that I wrote in Part 28, can you guess what I found? In the 1861 Index from microfilm FHL[1083942], I discovered the following: July... Catherine Marie Antoinette, 4 Janvier 1861. And the entry number was number 2. This was a reference to the birth registration of a Catherine Marie Antoinette July! I did not believe it! What had I found?

And sure enough. I had discovered the missing birth registration. I had found the birth registration for, I think, great-grandmother Marie Antoinette! And this was Catherine Marie Antoinette July. The name almost matched the name Marie Antoinette C. Abraham (née July) on the 1940 San Diego Death Certificate. The 2 January 1861 birth date certainly matches.

But this birth registration stated that Catherine Marie Antoinette July was born at Île de Gorée, of Sénégal, not in Bordeaux, France. This is contrary to the place of birth provided on the 1919 SS Parima passenger manifest, (see Part 5) which states that Marie Antoinette was born in Bordeaux, France. Well, as there are many other items, and points of note and logic that concur that this Catherine Marie Antoinette July is the same as our great-grandmother Marie Antoinette (née July) Abraham, we can almost, to a 98.3% degree of certainty, agree that this is the birth registration of our great-grandmother. And that she was the daughter of Jean Jacques Alfred and Catherine Cora (née Merle) July… and that she was born in Sénégal, in western Africa.

And check out the following, the birth registration, on two pages...

And my attempted translation:
No. 2

On the 4th of January at 7:00 am, 1861, appearing before Henry Robert, clerk of the Court of First Instance of the island of Gorée, Sénégal, fulfilling the other duties of the officer of Civil Registrations within the jurisdiction of the said island, the undersigned; Mr. Jean Jacques, Alfred July, merchant clerk, 28 years old, living and domiciled at Gorée, declared to us that at 5:00 am on the 2nd of this January at his home _____ at 9 rue du Port, that a female child was that he would like to present to us and give the names of Catherine Marie Antoinette, recognizing him to be the father of this child and of the Mrs. Catherine Cora Merle, his wife, without profession, 25 years old, living and domiciled at the said Gorée. Jean Charles, Alfred July, Pottrin Leu, Robert
And on a quick note, I finally think I found a good translation of the occupation "commis négociant". According to the History of Work Information System it could be translated as a "clerk of a wholesale dealer". This makes sense!

Success, success, success! Great-grandmother Marie Antoinette Abraham was born Catherine Marie Antoinette July on 2 January 1861 at 9 rue du Port, on the island of Gorée, in Sénégal, in Africa. Her parents were Jean Jacques Alfred and Catherine Cora (née Merle) July and she had an older brother, Pierre Gustave Henry, and an older sister, Marie-Amélia Blanche.

Stay tune for Part 31. Enjoy your Sunday,

Jim

26 juillet 2009 - Arrière-grand-mère Catherine de Marie-Antoinette (née July) Abraham, trouvé! - Partie 30

Eureka!
