My Tangent – New Sources of Information – Hurrah!

Afternoon,

I haven’t worked too much today on my Transcription Project. I did find a couple of gems of sites that most recently have been put online. These certainly can assist with my work in genealogy and ancestry.

If you check the Family Search website and the Record Search Pilot there are a number of new set of indexed records available. These online indexes available online do not include the images of the documents but can be used in any search and research project.


These include:

  • Bahamas Births, 1850-1891
  • Barbados Baptisms, 1739-1891
  • Barbados Burials, 1854, 1854-1885
  • Barbados Marriages, 1854-1879
  • Caribbean Birth and Baptisms, 1590-1928
  • Caribbean Deaths and Burials, 1790-1906
  • Caribbean Marriages, 1591-1905
  • Grenada Birth and Baptism, 1866-1891
  • Jamaica Births and Baptisms, 1752-1920

The one thing that I noted is that the above Caribbean categories may reflect information of Barbados.

Another database that is available online as a part of the Record Search Pilot is:

  • Jamaica, Trelawny Parish Civil Registration Births, 1878-1930.

This database is not indexed as yet and includes images and documentation only.

Part 272s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – A New Smith Indenture Study Matrix

Evening,

Following my previous two Matrixes, I have finally completed a New Smith Indenture Study Matrix for the microfilm FHL [1563380]. As per my two other Matrixes the purpose of the Matrix is to assist in the finding of those Postings of Transcriptions of Records associated with specific Smiths. This Matrix represents the microfilm which is a copy of the Grenada Register of Records, 1825-1834 (v. H5-O5).


Please note that I have not segregated the Posting numbers by unique individuals only by unique names, as encountered in each Record.

I have only listed the singular Smith names. In other words, there may be more than one individual with the same name, for example, Andrew Smith. I have only recorded those names as single entries if and only if there is a unique prefix or suffix added to the name. For example, James Smith and James Smith, Junior each are represented on separate, single lines of the Matrix. The listed Smith may or may not be the same individual but the transcribed Record(s) may not have any clues or hints as to that fact.

Part 271s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1829 James Smith

Afternoon,

The Transcription Project in the search of the genealogy and ancestry of ggg-grandfather continues. But I can tell you that as per my biorhythm scoring,  even though my emotional being is at its highest peak of cycle, my intellect and my physical attributes have swung to the lowest or lowest possible levels. I was wondering why I really wasn’t into my research today, nor did I trim the bamboo hedges as I had expected.

Today’s Posting is in a way connected to the Record I transcribed in Part 260s. As I transcribed this Record, a schedule "B" entered 19 June 1829 to the Grenada Registers of Records and found on the microfilm FHL [1563380], I had a feeling that I had seen some of the names included in the Record before. Because this Record is lettered "B", I would think that it is a part or an annex to some previous Record. At this point I cannot provide that answer.

Also, the reference to James Smith, of the Island of Grenada, Gentleman, cannot be ascertained immediately that he may have been ggg-grandfather James. This Record does not have any ancillary hints or clues of the origins of James Smith.

My Tangent - A Genealogy Hunt and Quilts SB Update

Afternoon,

It’s been a while since I provided notice of my Blog updates: Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt and Quilts SB.

Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt, soon to be replaced by A Genealogy Hunt, has now topped 4,041 visits and 8,865 page views. This March had the highest number of visitors since I began last May. Genealogy’s ranking in Top Listed.net seems to maintain regularly as one of the top 5 Sites. (I just checked and Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt is now number 2.)

I am continuing with my Transcription Project just searching as many Records for the genealogy and ancestral origins of GGG-Grandfather James Smith. Check out the newest Postings referencing property purchases.

Postings to Quilts SB are, as always, at a slower pace. Since the Blogsite’s inception last month, we’ve seen 343 visits and 843 page views. This morning we are ranked number 26 of the top 50 at Top Listed.net. We did reach a number 2 at one point. With all the quilting sites worldwide I didn’t expect to even touch the top 500.

To date we have completed six quilt designs in our C&N Series: C&N; Patience; Altered Logs I; Altered Logs II; A Mazed; and V Bricks. C&N, Patience and Altered Logs II are finished. In our TATW (pronounced tay-toe) Series we now have five designs: Provence; Café au Lait; Tango 3; and Bayberry. We began a new one yesterday inspired by a Japanese design called Kanzashi. And we are working on two other designs which, all-things-being-equal will find homes in Ashville, North Carolina and Barrie, Ontario.

I’ve upgraded my operating system to Windows 7 and have added Ubuntu which of course means that some applications and programs may or may not take too kindly to being disturbed.

And we keep ourselves occupied.

Part 270o – Olton Genealogy – Manfred Percival Olton Time Line Update

Evening, or Late Afternoon,

Tonight’s supper is pasta with crab and a cream white wine, roasted red pepper sauce. It’s an experiment. You never know.

Thanks to Bernard for sending the information and link to Tombstones.bb. This is a good resource and it appears that it is relatively new and in the process of accumulating data. All-things-being-equal the database has provided a Burial Date for Manfred Percival Olton. See Part 201o

The date burial at Westbury Cemetery, in Barbados, provided is 15 August 1913. An age of 64 years, at death, is provided. This calculates that he was born approximately about 1849.

I have updated the Time Manfred Percival Olton Line to reflect this newly found information.


From the Tombstones.bb database there are hits to approximately 13 cemeteries where the name Olton had been recorded.

Now we can cross reference the Civil Death Registrations from Barbados in the hopes that we can find an actual entry for Manfred Percival Olton.

Part 269s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1829 James Smith – Property Cont’d

When does one peppercorn equal just about three million pounds?

And I thought I would try and get this next Record completed so as to complete Item 3 of the microfilm FHL [1563380]. This is the follow up Indenture of Release to the Document transcribed in Part 268s.

From the Indenture we discover that the name of James Bain’s wife was Margaret. James Bain is the gentleman with whom James Smith, the Carpenter and possible ggg-grandfather James, conducted the transaction of the purchase of the lot and parcel of land in the Town of Saint George. The fact that James Bain’s wife, Margaret is included in this document solidifies the idea that one does not know what relationship, genealogical or ancestral connection may be referenced. The old adage of “He left no stone unturned” most definitely applies.

The financial transaction for the lot and parcel of land appears to be £3400 -. -. valued in 1829. I did find a website where I was able to calculate the purchasing power of the 1829 British Pound to the year 2008. Using the Retail Price Index, the 1829 £3400 -. -. is worth approximately £250,000.00. Using the Average Earnings calculation the value of the same 1829 £3400 in 2008 would be somewhere in the vicinity of £2,800,000.00. (Just the banker in me checking out the numbers and I used the site Measuring Worth.)

Part 268s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1829 James Smith - Property

The Transcription Project is continuing, and continuing, and continuing… and I swear the “legalese” just seems so much like added words written in as filler, but then again I’m not a lawyer. But I’m certainly learning quick and easy short-cuts on how to copy and paste in Word, the continued repetitions of phrases.

This next Record, I believe is another “Peppercorn Transaction”. James Smith, the Carpenter, and possibly ggg-grandfather James Smith purchases another lot and parcel of land in what appears to be on the waterfront of the Carenage in the Town of Saint George, Grenada. And again there does not seem to be any reference to ggg-grandfather James’ genealogy and ancestry.

My work with the Transcription Project continues. This Record from the Grenada Registers of Records is comprised of four pages; 577 to 580. It follows the Indenture from pages 575, 576, and 577 and is a part of the transaction between James Smith and William Stuart. All-things-being-equal this could be ggg-grandfather James Smith but there is no discernible clue of his genealogy or ancestry.

At times I never know what I’m going to chance upon; from Inverugie House in Scotland to Good Hope Estate in Saint George and Saint David in Grenada. Only about 4,400 hundred miles; 7,100 kilometers… Quite a distance to transact a sale in 1828. Definitely no PayPal. It is amazing what I am learning in this search for the genealogy and ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The next Record of my Transcription Project appears to be in two parts. The first part, pages 575, 576, and 577 from the Grenada Registers of Records, 1825-1834 (v. H5-O5) and downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1563380]. I believe this Record includes ggg-grandfather James Smith and a transaction document to purchase Good Hope Estate situated in the Parishes of Saint George and Saint David.

Evening,

As I said, this work can be most definitely mind-muddling. The search for the genealogy and ancestral origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith has me checking under every “alphabetical rock”, so-to-speak. And sometimes it seems that the “legalese” in these Documents never ends; they just go on and on forever.

This Record, of the Grenada Registers of Records has many dates but as you can read, it was made 16 June 1827 and sworn to 10 April 1828. From the actual body of the Document it may have begun somewhere between seven and eight years earlier. The Document is long, 12 pages and was downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1563380].

All-things-being-equal the James Smith referred to in this Record is not ggg-grandfather James. There is a wealth of information and names of persons and places in this Document and may assist in the search of one family’s line and ancestry.

members thereof and all those Forty eight Negroe Slaves thereto be
longing whose names are set forth in the Schedule hereto annexed
marked A and all other the Hereditaments and premises comprised
in the said Indentures of Lease and Release of the thirty first day

four and the increase thereof together with the future issue and
increase of the females thereof And the reversion and reversions remain
der and remainders of all and singular the said plantation estate or
parcel of land Messuages Hereditaments Slaves and premises and every
part thereof and all estate right title interest use trust poʃseʃsion proper
ty claim and demand whatsoever at law and in equity of them the said

released or intended so to be with their and every of their appurtenances

administrators Acts of Deeds of the other of them do severally covenant
and declare to and with the said James Smith Archibald Smith and
Robert McCunn their heirs and assigns by these presents that they

Before the Honorable Jeffry Hart Bent Chief Justice
of His Majestys Supreme Court of Judicature for the
Island of Grenada and its dependencies.
Personally came and appeared Richard Henry Thomas of the Island
of Grenada Gentleman who being duly sworn on the holy Evangelists
of Almighty God maketh Oath and saith that he was present and did
see George Gun Munro as the Attorney in the several and respective names
of and as and for the several and respective acts and deeds of Susannah
Henrietta Pegus Peter William Pegus, Henrietta Margaretta Pegus,
May Anne Jane Pegus and Frederick Edward Pegus five of the parties

Executing the within Indenture duly sign and seal the said Inden-
ture and also the Indenture of Bargain and Sale or Lease for a Year thereto
leasing? And this deponent further saith that he was also present and
did see Pierre Aman Belfon another of the parties to the within Inden
ture and also to the Indenture of Bargain and Sale or lease for a year
sign seal and as and for his act and deed execute and deliver the same
respectively And this deponent also saith that he was present and did
see Robert Kirk as the Attorney in the several and respective names of
and as and for the respective acts and deeds of James Smith Archibald
Smith and Robert McCunn three other of the parties executing the
within Indenture duly sign seal and deliver the same And this deponent
lastly saith that in testimony of such due execution by the said parties
as aforesaid he this deponent did subscribe his name as a witness thereto
