Part 403s – Smith Robertson – Indenture Research – 1817 Smith Plus Smith Plus Smith… Plus Smith – Is This GGG-Grandfather James Smith?

31 October 2010

Afternoon,

The scribe of these next few pages of an Indenture of the Grenada Registers of Records has certainly given my pair of eyes a most definite “squint-and-blurred” exercise. All-things-being-equal ggg-grandfather James Smith and his possible brother-in-law Louis La Grenade may have been mentioned in this next document.

The Smiths, that is the prime Smiths mentioned in this next document, more than likely are of the Smith Family which I have given the labeling the “Jordan Hill Smiths”. This is the first time that I have actually found any type of reference made, to him who I think was my ggg-grandfather James Smith, included with the Smith Family, that I have labeled the Jordan Hill Smiths.

On Page 246 of this Indenture reference is made to the “Me∫sieurs Smith and La Grenade”. These two gentlemen could possibly be ggg-grandfather James Smith and his brother-in-law Mr. La Grenade, (possibly Louis La Grenade) who may have been the husband to ggg-grandfather James' purported sister, ggg-grandaunt Betsey (née Smith) La Grenade. See Part 88s and Part 61s as cross-references.

The reading in this Indenture comes pretty damn close at either verifying or assuming that the Smith threesome; Archibald, James, and James, Junior Smith could be in somehow related to the Smith of “on the North by Lands….” Is this another piece to the puzzle? Is this unidentified Smith ggg-grandfather James Smith? And are there any familial ties to Archibald, James, and James, Junior Smith. (See my Smiths of Jordanhill, Scotland Chart.)

There is a slight possibility that the “Smith and la Grenada” mentioned on Page 246 of this document could be ggg-grandfather James Smith and the husband of ggg-grandaunt Betsey (née Smith ) La Grenade. At this time this is all I can offer and present from this latest document and work.

Here are the images of the pages 245 through and including 247 of the Grenada Registers of Records found in Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1563379].

My Tangent - 1934 - Origins and Introduction of DD

29 October 2010

Morning,

Genealogy and the search for one's origins certainly can lead to many a tangent. Here's the 1934 introduction of Donald Duck.

And I just will keep searching, and I will just keep blogging my daily searches and researches, all to fit the pieces of my family tree and branches.

Guess there is a lesson here...

Part 402s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1816 Archibald Smith

27 October 2010

Evening,

The search continues. And continues... and continues.

The next Indenture to be worked on in the search for the origins and genealogy of ggg-grandfather James Smith is of the Grenada Registers of Records and is found in Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1563379]. I can honestly say that this Document certainly is not one of the easier ones that I’ve tackled.

All-things-being-equal there does not appear to be any intimation or hint of a relationship or any connection to ggg-grandfather James. And so the trek carries on.

Please bear with me regarding my transcription work. There are a number of words and names that I cannot make out. Here is my transcription –

Part 401s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1816 James Smith – Good Hope Estate Sold

25 October 2010

Morning,

I’ve been called to report for Jury Duty this morning. My lot falls about middle of the pack. I may or may not be gone for a couple of days.

And this is the following Indenture that appears to commit ggg-grandfather James Smith to the purchase of Good Hope Estate in the Parish of Saint George. The transaction is between ggg-grandfather James and a Julien Lussan, also written Lu∫san. The total cost appears to be 1816 funds of £1600. Converting this amount to today’s monies, this equals about £54,336.00, or the equivalent in US $85,674.40; give or take the conversion factor.

This Record is a great find but does not provide for any further discovery as to the origins or genealogy of ggg-grandfather James. This real estate transaction occurred on 1 March 1816, approximately one year after the birth of gg-grandfather James, Jr., who was born 20 March 1815.

The Indentures, Pages 311 through and including 314, are found in the Grenada Registers of Records. I have downloaded the images from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1563379].

Part 400s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1816 James Smith – Good Hope Estate

24 October 2010

Morning,

It is amazing what the sum of five shillings and one pepper corn would have got you in 1816… Good Hope Estate, in the Parish of Saint George in the Island of Grenada.

(The inserted image is of the Town of Saint George, circa 1790.)

In my research and as a part of my Indenture Research Project, and my search for the origins and genealogy of my ggg-grandfather James Smith, it is amazing, at times, what I have been able to chance upon. This Indenture, Pages 309 to 311, of the Grenada Registers of Records, is the 1816 contract between ggg-grandfather James and a Julien Lussan regarding the property and plantation known as Good Hope Estate.

Although this Document does not provide any ancestral origin of ggg-grandfather James it does provide some correlating information regarding his life and being. Three key pieces of information and data are revealed and corroborated by this documentation. GGG-grandfather James
  1. Is confirmed, once again, of the occupation of “Mill Carpenter”.
  2. Prior to moving to Good Hope Estate in Saint George, it appears that he was from and may have lived in the Parish of Saint David. (This does not preclude the possibility that before the date of this Indenture, that he may have lived elsewhere, as for example in the Town of St. George.)
  3. Lived at the Estate called Good Hope in the Parish of Saint George in Grenada.
The following are the Pages 309 through and including 311 from the Grenada Registers of Records. The images as downloaded from Item 4 of microfilm [1563379].

Part 399s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1810 Renaud & De Creeft – Part 2 – James Smith

23 October 2010

Evening,

And you’re probably asking yourself as to what is he doing posting a Record with no Smith name recorded in the content? Well there is. In this part, which in sequence is the second part, but it is also the first part, but I wrote about that in Part 398s, and I’m still confused.

This search and research for the genealogy and ancestry of my ggg-grandfather Smith certainly at times has me discombobulated. Anyway, at the end of this document there is a List or Schedule attached which includes a number of names of persons and enterprises that appear to may have loaned funds to one of the parties. From the tenure of the document, it seems that the other party becomes somehow connected with the resolution of the contract.

In the fifth line of the first page, Page 305, there is the following statement – “is Seized in his demesne as of fee”. I had to look this one up. From the 1919 publication by Benjamin W. Pope, Legal Definitions – A Collection of Words and Phrases as Applies and Defined by the Courts, Lexicographers and Authors of Books on Legal Subjects, I discovered a reasonable explanation. But to tell you the truth, I still don’t understand… Guess I’ll have to take some Contract Law courses.

From the Grenada Registers of Records here are the images of Pages 305 through and including 309. I downloaded them from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1563379].

And my transcription… See Page 309 for the James Smith entry.

Part 398s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1810 Renaud & De Creeft – Part 1

Afternoon,

Okay, okay… I’m not an expert in the word of Contract Law, but it certainly is like learning another language. That is, the Legal English of 1816. But I do, or I thought I did have an education in Organizational Management, but I am somewhat perplexed at the order of entry of this and of the next Indenture from the Grenada Registers of Records.

This next Record, beginning on Page 303 of the Registers is related to the one that follows beginning on Page 305. It, the one on Page 303, was made on 7 October 1810 and entered to the Registers 28 February 1816. The one beginning on Page 305 was made 8 October 1810 but entered seven days early to the Registers on 17 February 1816. From this layman’s miniscule comprehension, the timing and entering makes no sense... and this man is certainly confused.

And this is just another part of the mysteries of the search and research for the origins and the ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. There is no Smith recorded in this Indenture but in the one following, which is related to this one, includes a James Smith in the annexed schedule.

Here are the images of Pages 303, 304, and 305 as downloaded from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1563379]

Part 397s - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Indenture Research - 1810 Archibald, James, John, and James, Jr. Smith - Cont'd

22 October 2010

Evening,

I’m back to working on my Indenture Research Project. This is my project where I am reviewing Records, Documents and Indentures entered to the Grenada Registers of Records in my search for the origin and genealogy of my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Following from Part 377s, , made on 4 October 2010, this new Record is a continuation of the same, I believe, contract between Archibald Smith and company and Ferdinand De Creeft and his wife, Renaud.

According to my review and based on the information provided by the actual Record I am not aware of any immediate connection or association with ggg-grandfather James. The Smiths involved are of the Jordanhill, Scotland. You can see my drafting of that Smith Family generations in my Descendant Chart, Smiths of Jordanhill, Scotland.

The following are the images of Pages 259 through and including 267 downloaded from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1563379].
