Part 752h – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1891 A Directory of The Eleventh Census – Holmes Family – Rahn, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania

16 August 2012

Good Day,

And who says you can’t find the 1890 US Census? Well almost, that is. In my search for the genealogy and history of the Holmes Family of Pennsylvania I stumbled across a great discovery. I found A Directory of the Eleventh Census of the Population of Schuylkill County… published in 1891 by E.E. Schartel in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

What does this mean?

This is a Directory “giving the names and ages of males and females, published by Cities, Boroughs, Wards, Townships, Precincts or Towns in connection with A Business Directory…” It is the reproduction and publication of some of the data of the 1890 US Census which “was largely destroyed in a fire in the U.S. Commerce Building in 1921." Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania was one of the counties in the United States that actually repeated the 1890 US Census data in a separate publication, the 1891 Directory.

And we have lucked out. On Page 733 of the Schuylkill County Directory I have been able to find our Holmes, even though spelled Holms, Family in Rahn Township. The entry includes great-grandparents John E. and Hannah and their children, as the date, granduncles John H., Warren T. William V., Richard B., and grandaunts Rebecca, Alice M., Katie, and Dora.

Here is a highlighted copy of Page 733.
